A Smoothie to Keep the Doc Away This Winter

It’s the week of Christmas!!! I’m sooo excited to spend time with family and just have a great time. Hopefully my excitement can hold through these next 4 days of work!

Along with Christmas comes winter. The thing I dread most about Chicago winters, is what can come along with them. Colds, the flu, sore throat, etc.

Usually, I come down with a little cold or a sore throat. This winter…I’m trying to avoid it….

With a Vitamin C packed Green Smoothie.



I’m convinced I can do it with this drink, along with exercising and eating healthy. If it doesn’t work……….at least the smoothie tastes great!

I packed this smoothie with every fruit and veggie that’s loaded with Vitamin C, and that would taste good in a smoothie of course. Random fact, green chilies provide the most amount of Vitamin C than any other food. 242 mg per serving! Problem is, they probably wouldn’t taste very good in a smoothie ;-)

This smoothie contains 146% of your daily Vitamin C needs. I think it’s got me covered!

This smoothie was very refreshing after a sweaty workout. I tend to stray away from smoothies during the cold winters, but I still try to have them after a workout, since they pack such a nutritional punch.

A Smoothie to Keep the Doc Away This Winter
1-2 (approx. 16oz)
  • ½ cup of orange juice
  • ¼ cup of milk (I used cows milk, but use whatever you have)
  • ½ cup strawberries
  • ½ banana
  • couple handfuls of spinach
  • 1-2 -1 scoop of vanilla protein powder, optional
  1. Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth.

Lisa and I have been having a lot of fun creating our 12 days of smoothie recipes. At first I thought it might be hard to create 12 great tasting smoothies, but we’ve realized the possibilities are endless. Yesterday, I was able to create an apple pie filling smoothie that was inspired by a friends request. It turned out great, and I can’t wait to share it with you guys!

    I’ve been thinking about ways to up the vitamin C in my kids diets… this is a perfect way to do that!!

    This smoothies sounds really good! 
    I’m a big fan of boosting the immune system. I learned recently that the body can absorb about 500mg vit C at once, so the best way to get a boost is to ingest vit c in 500mg doses a couple times during the day. So you could have this smoothie in the morning, and then have 2.5 servings of green chilis later in the day :)
    I tend to focus on probiotic intake for immune boost—I just read that healthy bacteria are in charge of around 70% of immune function! So…yogurt, cultured veg, and stuff like that are entering my daily rotation!

      Your comment just shows why I love you and your blog! Your funny and I learn SO much from you! I had some Greek yogurt this morning and plan of having this smoothie later so hopefully my immune system is good for the day :-) Maybe I’ll add in some green chillies ;-)

    I’ve been drinking this every morning this season too – except mine has almond butter and no OJ or strawberries. I think I need to mix it up with your recipe, for something a little lighter and fruitier! Thanks girls!

    Maybe I need to start drinking these smoothies, because I’ve already been sick enough this fall/winter! :( I workout regularly, get a lot of sleep, and eat a lot of veggies, but I could probably use some more fruits in my diet!
